Community Care for Rural Veterans

Together With Veterans (TWV) of Salem County is a dedicated suicide prevention program that focuses on the unique needs of rural Veterans. Our mission is to foster collaboration between Veterans and the local community, creating practical strategies for mental well-being and resilience. By leveraging the voices of Veterans and encouraging community involvement, we aim to create a supportive network that transforms lives. Together, we can combat isolation and strengthen our communities.

Did you know…

Veterans living in rural America are more likely to die by suicide than urban veterans?

Our mission at Together with Veterans (TWV) is to implement, evaluate, and promote a community-based approach to suicide prevention in rural communities across the country. In other words, being “Together” is crucial. Simple, but true.

We also strategically connect our local veterans with a support network full of valuable resources. This is made possible by close collaboration with a number of organizations, including:

● Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research

● Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) for Suicide Prevention

● Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Behavioral Health Program (WICHE BHP)

Our Guiding Principles

● Veteran-driven

● Collaborative

● Informed by evidence

● Community-centered

TOGETHER is better!

Our 6-Step Action Plan

Our strategies are implemented using a 6-step action plan and rely on community-wide awareness, knowledge, and implementation. In other words, we want to not only equip our veterans, but the people in their circles as well.

Provide suicide prevention training

Enhance primary care suicide prevention

Promote connectedness and help-seeking

Improve communication across veteran-serving programs

Enhance behavioral health suicide prevention

Promote lethal means safety

Would You Like To Get Involved?

Our veterans are not born as a GI. They grow in front of us and, for the most part, live ‘normal’ formative lives here in Salem County before making the decision to join our Armed Forces. That means that we’re surrounded by an at-risk population, one that relies on our shared vigilance.
Effective suicide prevention is easy to plan and strategize, but not so easily implemented. TWV Salem County is powered by volunteers, and we welcome all who would like to help.
• Follow us on Facebook and share posts
• Attend our events
• Become a community partner
• Just ask! We can always plug you into a role that fits your strengths and interests
Thanks in advance for your help and support. It truly does make all the difference.
We want to not only support our veterans, but the people in their circles as well.
Community-wide awareness is key!
